I usually take the bus to work. It comes every fifteen minutes, and most days it’s on time. Even if it’s a little late, it’s not a big deal. I leave early enough, so I still arrive before nine. It’s not usually a problem.
Most mornings are the same. I get on at the third stop, sit near the back, and listen to music. The ride takes about twenty minutes. Traffic is normally slow near the bridge, but it keeps moving. I don’t worry about it.
But last Tuesday was different.
The bus didn’t show up at 8:10. I checked the app. It said “delayed,” but it didn’t say how long. Ten minutes passed. Then fifteen. A small group of us was waiting, looking down the street every few seconds. That doesn’t normally happen.
When the bus finally arrived, it was already full. We all squeezed in, but traffic was completely stopped near the bridge. We didn’t move for almost half an hour.
I’m usually calm about these things. It’s not usually a problem. But that day, I walked into the office twenty-five minutes late.
Most days are fine. Just not that one.
