I woke up when my alarm rang, but instead of getting up right away, I stayed in bed for a few extra minutes. I checked my phone, answered a couple of messages, and then realized the time. Normally I’m already in the shower by then. I rushed through the bathroom routine. I brushed my teeth, washed my face, and skipped shaving. In the kitchen, I made coffee but didn’t sit down to drink it. I took a few quick sips while standing by the counter. I usually make toast and eggs, but today I grabbed a banana and a yogurt from the fridge. When I went back to my room, I noticed my clean shirt wasn’t where I expected it to be. I looked through the chair, then the closet, and finally found it still in the washing machine. I picked another one, put on my shoes, and checked my bag to make sure I had my keys and wallet. I left the apartment about twenty minutes later than normal. The elevator was slow, and I waited longer at the crosswalk. On the bus, there were more people than usual, and I had to stand the whole way. By the time I arrived at work, the day had already started without me, and I could feel it in the pace of everything.
